When my company started almost eight months ago I choose to open a limited liability company. There are many reasons why I choose to do this. When your a non profit organization is because your organization is governed by that state. It limits your ablity to advocate the way you want on behalf of people with mental health issues, their families and children who have mental health conditions.
You must setup your organization according to the way the goverment wants, which is sometimes not in the best interest of your client. Let’s take medicaid block grants as an example, they are handed out a lot of the time to politically connected organizations, in Representative Tim Murphy (R) PA original mental health care bill in order to get a medicaid block grant your state must have assisted out patient treatment. The issue with this is individuals with mental health conditions would be placed on AOT even if they didn’t need it, because states wanted the medicaid block grants and it would cause a ton of corruption.
It would be much easier for me as the founder of this company to have created a nonprofit, keep my mouth shut and take advantage of all the grants, funding and benefits available to a nonprofit organization.
I have nothing against nonprofits. I volunteer for a mental health nonprofit even as a owner of my own company, but I choose the harder path because of my ethics, morals and truly wanting to make the mental health system better and clients of it benefit from it.
Right now I am not working I use whatever I have in my checking account, which isn’t a lot and my husband who is the VP/Technology Manager he helps me also.
We are far from rich and my husband spends his nights hours each night, developing this website. I spend hours researching the different aspects of business. I developed this company and it’s program not only from my lived experience, but knowledge of the mental health system, education and work experience. I love what I do, but the fact of the matter is without funding I can’t sustain our business.
This is why we ASK YOU TO PLEASE DONATE NO MATTER HOW SMALL, IF EVERYONE WHO VISITS THIS PAGE CHIPS IN IT HELPS A LOT. IT IS UNFORTUNATELY, NOT TAX DEDUCTIBLE, BUT YOU WILL BE DOING THREE THINGS BREAKING THE BARRIERS OF STIGMA TO MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS, HELPING INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES AND CARE GIVERS OF CHILDREN WITH MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS BE POINTED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION FOR CARE AND RESOURCES, LAST BUT NOT LEAST CONTRIBUTING TO KEEPING OUR WORK GOING.
